While we offer many degree and certificate programs, we are also a great place for students to take lower-division transfer classes at a more affordable price. We also serve many students who are interested in taking courses for professional development or personal enjoyment.
What is a Non-Degree Seeking Student?
A non-degree-seeking student is enrolled for college credit classes but is not working toward a college degree at NIC and not planning to apply for federal financial aid or scholarships.
Non-degree students must apply as a degree-seeking student if they wish to pursue a degree or certificate at NIC.
NIC offers a special rate to non-degree-seeking individuals who are 60 years or older. Degree-seeking seniors will pay full tuition rates for all courses. Visit the tuition and fees page for additional details.
Apply as a Non-Degree-Seeking Student
NIC is currently accepting applications for Spring, Summer, and Fall 2023.
Residency Status
Residency status is based on information provided on the NIC Application for Admissions. Your residency classification will affect your tuition rate. Filling out this application accurately and completely will ensure you are charged the correct tuition rate for your classes.
There are five types of residency at North Idaho College:
- Resident (includes Ada, Bonneville, Canyon, Jerome, Kootenai and Twin Falls counties)
- Non-District (In-State)
- Washington State
- Western Undergraduate Exchange Program (WUE)
- Non-Resident (Out-of-State/International)
Communication will be sent to your personal email within three to five business days of submitting your application. This email will include your student ID, instructions to access your MyNIC and Cardinal Mail accounts, and dates on when registration begins.
An unofficial transcript may be required if you are needing to take a class at NIC that has a prerequisite you completed at another college. Students can submit an unofficial transcript via email stating what class they need to be reviewed to fulfill the prerequisite.
For an official evaluation, you must request official transcripts to be sent directly to NIC.

You can save money by planning ahead, so start early!
- The $25 setup fee is waived if you set up a payment plan before the beginning of the semester.
- The $50 late fee is waived if you set up a payment plan before the 100% refund date.
Concurrent Enrollment Students
Are you also taking classes at University of Idaho or Lewis-Clark State College?
Concurrent Enrollment allows a student to enroll in NIC and University of Idaho or Lewis-Clark State College for the same semester and combine their credits to receive the maximum amount of financial aid. For more information on Concurrent Enrollment contact Cardinal Central.
You're a Cardinal!
Once you are registered in courses, you are officially considered a current student! We want you to be ready before classes start, so below are some items you'll want to take care of before the first day of classes:
Parking Permit
A valid parking permit is required for any vehicle, except motorcycles and vehicles displaying handicapped plates or placards, parked at the main NIC campus and the Parker Technical Education Center during the academic year. Parking permits are only valid for the semesters printed on the permit. Permits expire at the end of Spring Semester. A new permit must be purchased every academic year.
