$1.2 million, five-year NIC TRIO program grant renewed

A $1,237,920 federal grant has been reauthorized to fund the North Idaho College TRIO Student Support Services program for five years allocated at $247,584 a year.

This is the fourth time the TRIO program has been renewed since 2001. It is 100 percent federally funded by the U.S. Department of Education and serves 160 NIC students a year.

“TRIO/SSS is a student retention program whose mission is to assist participants in overcoming social, cultural, financial, personal, academic, and other challenges in order to be successful in graduating and then transferring to a four-year institution,” said Holly Edwards, director of NIC TRIO/SSS.

TRIO is funded to help students who are low-income, first-generation college students and students with disabilities. It helps students learn how to maneuver through higher education, complete classes and reach educational goals by offering services such as intensive academic advising, tutoring, visits to transfer institutions, attendance at cultural events, workshops related to career exploration and financial literacy training including help accessing scholarships.

TRIO funding traces its roots back to the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964. By the late 1960s, the term “TRIO” was used to describe the three original programs aimed at providing access and support to underrepresented students in college. Since then, the TRIO programs have been expanded and improved to provide a wider range of services and reach more students in need of assistance.
