NIC choirs to present ‘Harvest of Sound' Oct. 13

NIC Choral Instructor Max Mendez leads the NIC Cardinal Chorale at one of their performances. The chorale will be giving a free performance Oct. 13.

The North Idaho College choirs and orchestra will present “Harvest of Sound” for a free performance at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13 in the Coeur d’Alene First Presbyterian Church at 521 Lakeside Ave.

“Harvest of Sound” will feature the NIC Cardinal Chorale, the NIC Chamber Orchestra and the NIC Chamber Singers.

The Cardinal Chamber Orchestra will be performing works by Vivaldi and Verdi with a mariachi song about the Big Ranch. The group is composed of strings and trumpet and is conducted by Gerard Mathes who has taught at NIC for 27 years and is a violinist himself.

Choral music of Bach, Mendelssohn, and Offenbach will be presented on this program.

NIC Choral Union consists of the Cardinal Chorale and Chamber Singers. The Choral Union has a long tradition of performing moving performances for audiences in the Inland Northwest and beyond. Both choirs have traveled throughout the United States and North America. Recently members of both ensembles performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City.  Choirs have also performed in Seattle, San Francisco and Mexico. Members of the both choirs consist of NIC students, alumni, faculty and staff, as well as area community members.

NIC’s Director of Choirs Max Mendez brings 35 years of experience to the Choral Union. Celebrating over 10 years at the college, he said he “Strives to instill a sense of artistry, quality, beauty, and community service in each performance.” Mendez is active in the area choral music and also serves as a clinician, performer, and guest conductor throughout the Northwest.
