NIC to kick start the holidays with ‘Gathering of the Bands'

North Idaho College is hosting two of its annual “Gathering of Bands” concerts at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, and Thursday, Nov. 19, in the Boswell Hall Schuler Performing Arts Center on NIC’s main campus. Due to increasing numbers in local school band programs, the festival will offer two concerts this year.

“It’s that time of the year again when we start thinking about the holidays and NIC’s ‘Gathering of Bands’ concerts would like to help you do just that by performing some of your favorite holiday tunes,” said NIC Band Director Terry Jones.

Each night will featuring a “Gathering Band” made up of about 200 members, who will play with the NIC Wind Symphony. The students come from all over North Idaho and Eastern Washington where they have been working on the pieces in their own bands and will join forces each afternoon to rehearse for the concert.

“The festival provides a wonderful opportunity for the students to meet students from other schools and work together instead of always competing against each other,” Jones said.

Dave Weatherred will conduct both of the “Gathering Bands.” Weatherred is the former Ferris High School Band director and currently works as an arts coordinator with Spokane Public Schools.

“For many, this holiday season is a very special. We finally get to see a new ‘Stars Wars’ film,” Jones said. “The North Idaho College Wind Symphony would like to heat up the anticipation buzz by performing a wonderful suite of music from ‘Star Wars’ arranged by former Eastman School of Music Wind Ensemble director Donald Hunsberger. This gorgeous arrangement brings back many memories of the first three landmark films.”

The NIC Wind Symphony is a community group with over 2,000 years of playing experience. The multi-generational group blends high school students, college students and community members into one ensemble to create art. The group is open to the public and meets one day a week during the college school year. The community is invited to join the 40-plus year tradition of the NIC Wind Symphony.

The concert is free and open to the public.
