Bart Vazquez and Amanda Johnson

Two North Idaho College students, Specialist Nathan R. Beyers and Specialist Nicholas “Nick” W. Newby, gave their lives for our country on July 7, 2011, in Baghdad, Iraq, supporting Operation New Dawn. Both men were assigned to the 145th Brigade Support Battalion based in Post Falls.

To honor the sacrifice made by Beyers and Newby, the NIC Veterans Center established the Beyers-Newby Veterans Scholarship through the North Idaho College Foundation.

Nearly $2,500 will be awarded this academic year and the first two NIC students to receive the scholarship have been named. Amanda Johnson and Bartholomew “Bart” Vazquez,” are both in NIC’s Registered Nursing program.

“I hope to pay back my help by staying and working in the community as a nurse and then later as a provider to care for those who financially lent me a hand,” said Johnson, who is from Rathdrum.

Vazquez joined the US Army right out of high school, where he was a combat medic and spent active duty in Kuwait. After being honorably discharged, he earned a bachelor’s degree in Health Science, with the goal of attending medical school. When his father developed an aggressive form of cancer, he had to put his education on hold while he went to work on the family ranch.

“School is very stressful and this scholarship helps shoulder some of that burden,” Vazquez said. “The gracious gift will be paid forward in quality and compassionate care of my future patients.”
