NIC student top in nation for musical composition

North Idaho College Music major Sam Rainey, 20, from Coeur d’Alene, was recently awarded first place in the national Jack Stone Award for New Music competition.

Rainey’s composition of “NYC Traffic Jam” was selected as the best composition created by a student currently enrolled at community college within the United States. Instrumentation for the competition is different every year, with “Saxophone Quartet” picked as this year’s category. Rainey will be flown to San Antonio, Texas, to attend a master class and performance of his piece on March 29 by the Bel Cuore Quartet at the Palmetto Center for the Arts.
