Special eclipse viewing event Aug. 21

If you haven't heard, there is a major event happening in the universe Aug. 21... and we're not talking about the beginning of Fall Semester 2017 at North Idaho College, although that is happening on that day too! On Aug. 21, the earth will align with the sun and the moon to cast a 70-mile shadow across the United States in the first solar eclipse seen across a majority of the U.S. in the past 43 years.

At North Idaho College, there will be a special event held as part of the Week of Welcome activities for new and returning students during the first week of school. At 10 a.m., employees and students are encouraged to gather on Eisenwinter Field to view the eclipse. A limited number of special eclipse viewing glasses will be distributed to students on a first-come, first-served basis thanks to Green Dot at Welcome Ambassador tables stationed at busy locations across campus.

Some cities are closing major interstate highways, which is impacting classes at other institutions. Questions are circulating on whether or not classes will be impacted at NIC. Classes are in session as scheduled for the first day of Fall Semester 2017 at North Idaho College and services will not be impacted by the eclipse. However, all available students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to join ASNIC Student Activities on the soccer field between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. when the projected 93-percent eclipse can be viewed in our region. Special edition North Idaho College eclipse T-shirts will be distributed to the first 50 attendees.

Safety tips from NASA on how to view the eclipse are available here.
