Former NIC head wrestling coach to speak at Booster Luncheon

John Owen, the legendary wrestling coach who led North Idaho College to eight National Junior College Athletic Association national championships, will be the guest speaker at the NIC Booster Club Luncheon at noon Tuesday, Aug. 29, at the Coeur d’Alene Resort.

Owen coached at NIC from 1976 to 1996 and had 17 top three national finishes over his 20-year Cardinal coaching career. Owen’s career record at NIC was an astounding 309-22-2, including 11 seasons with an undefeated record. Owen also won 18 NJCAA region championships and coached numerous All-Americans, establishing NIC as the most dominant wrestling program in the nation at the junior college level. Owen was inducted into the NJCAA and the NIC Hall of Fame after his retirement from college coaching. He continues to coach at the high school level in Washington in his spare time to fulfill his love of the sport.

The public is welcome to attend the luncheon. The NIC Booster Club meets on the second and last Tuesday of each month at noon at various locations in the community. Check out the NIC athletics department website for more details at or contact the NIC athletics office at (208) 769-3348.
