NIC to host American Indian Heritage Week April 2-4, Round Dance April 7


North Idaho College is hosting a variety of events in honor of American Indian Heritage Week April 2 – 4 and April 7. All events are free and open to the public. The week will finish with a Round Dance from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 7, in NIC’s Christianson Gym.

Monday, April 2

The weeklong series of events kicks off with the interactive session “How Does Sovereignty Function Today” with guest speaker attorney Howard Funke from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Edminster Student Union Building Lake Coeur d’Alene Room. The topic will cover an understanding of sovereignty through policy, social, political context, led by Funke who has specialized in tribal law for more than 35 years. There will be a question-and-answer session following the presentation.

Tuesday, April 3

Laura Laumatis, Lake Management coordinator for the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, will speak on “Protecting chatq’ele’/Coeur d’Alene Lake: Past, Present, and Future” from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Edminster Student Union Building Lake Coeur d’Alene Room. Laumatis’ presentation will explore the history, recovery and health of the lake and its tributaries with pictures and discussion.

Wednesday, April 4

Dr. Laurie Arnold, director of Native Studies and assistant professor of History at Gonzaga University, will discuss a revisionist approach to Plateau tribal history with “The Place Where We Live: The Indigenous Columbia Plateau” from 1 to 2:15 p.m. Edminster Student Union Building Blue Creek/Echo Bay Room.

Saturday, April 7

From 5 to 9 p.m. a variety of drum groups, hand drum singers, storytellers, and dance groups will perform in Christianson Gym. Native craft-making, food and resource tables will be available at this free, family-friendly event. All proceeds from food sales will support the Che’n shish Scholarship for Native American students.
