NIC to host 20th Anniversary Celebration of Nine-Point Agreement

The community is invited to come celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Nine-Point Agreement with the Coeur d’Alene Tribe Wednesday, April 25, in the Edminster Student Union Building Ts’elusm Dining Room on NIC’s main campus. The reception will begin at 3 p.m. and the program will begin at 3:30 p.m.

“We’d like everyone to join us for this special event celebrating the longstanding relationship with the college and the Coeur d’Alene Tribe,” said Graydon Stanley, NIC vice president for Student Services. “We’re extremely proud of our close ties and the 20-year anniversary of the agreement is the perfect opportunity to recognize our mutual efforts.”

In 1997, NIC signed the Nine Point Agreement with the Coeur d’Alene Tribe for the purpose of working together on projects of mutual benefit to both communities as well as making NIC a more welcoming and supportive environment for Native American students. The plan consisted of nine points, with each led by team leaders from NIC. The 18 team leaders worked intimately with the tribe on direction for the mutually determined goals for each point. In October 2009, the Nine-Point Agreement coordinators revisited each point to assure that it was current and pertinent. Part of this 20-year anniversary is to celebrate what the tribe and the college have done together and to revisit the nine points and make certain that our journey forward is as fruitful as our past, Stanley said.

The celebration is free and open to the public. Hors d’oeuvres will be provided. RSVP to Nancy Edwards at or (208) 665-5086.
