NIC volleyball program signs recruits

Several athletes recently accepted scholarships to play for the North Idaho College volleyball team for the 2004-2005 season. Sarah Johnston, a 5-foot-8-inch opposite hitter, graduated from Priest River Lamanna High School in Priest River, Idaho. She is a three-time All-Tournament team league player and she earned the offensive player of the year title three years in a row. She was also named to the All-North Idaho first team, All-State first team, All-Intermountain League team and was co-MVP of the league her senior year. Johnston plans to major in elementary education at NIC. Melissa Merchant, a 6-foot-2-inch middle hitter, graduated from Freedom High School in Oakley, Calif. She was selected as Most Improved Player her freshman year and went on to make the second team All-Bay Valley Athletic League her junior year. Merchant plans to major in political science at NIC. Chanele Larsen, a 6-foot-1-inch middle hitter, graduated from Auburn Riverside High School in Auburn, Wash. She was a two-time All-South Puget Sound League first team player and Captain's Award recipient and a two-time All-Area team player. She was also selected to the All-State selection team and was named Offensive Player of the Year her senior year. Larsen plans to major in general studies at NIC. Collese Dorman, a 6-foot opposite hitter, graduated from Fife High School in Tacoma, Wash. She was selected as team MVP and Seamount League MVP her junior year and was named to the All-State volleyball team and first team All-Area her senior year. Dorman plans to major in general studies at NIC. Allie Rawlins, a 6-foot outside hitter, graduated from Pleasant Grove High School in Pleasant Grove, Utah. Rawlins averaged 10 kills per game and 17 aces per game her senior year. She was named Best Offensive Player and was named to the All-Region, All-State, All-Tournament at state and the Senior All-Star teams. Rawlins plans to major in political science at NIC. Kelcey Cavan, a 5-foot-10-inch outside hitter, graduated from Skyview High School in Billings, Mont. She was selected to the All-Conference team her junior and senior years and made the All-State team both years. Cavan plans to major in general studies at NIC. Juli Pearson, a 6-foot-2-inch middle hitter, graduated from Coeur d'Alene High School and attended Brigham Young University-Hawaii and BYU in Provo, Utah before transferring to NIC. She played volleyball at BYU-Hawaii for one year and helped the team take the conference, regional and national titles. Pearson plans to major in general studies at NIC.
