NIC cheerleaders bring home five awards from camp
The North Idaho College cheerleading squad returned from a recent Universal Cheerleaders Association summer camp with top awards in every category they participated in.
The three-day camp held at Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Wash. included instruction on pyramids, partner stunts, cheers, sidelines and a camp-taught fight song. On the final day of camp, the squads performed in a competition-style venue and trophy winners were chosen by camp directors.
NIC's 18-member cheerleading squad earned the Most Collegiate Mascot Award and the Leadership Award, which is awarded to the squad that other camp participants would most like to be a part of if they didn't cheer for their school's squad. NIC cheerleaders also earned awards for the best sideline, the best cheer and the best camp-taught fight song.
“We had an injury on the team and had to completely change our whole routine right before the competition, but they were able to adjust quickly and still take top awards,” said NIC Cheerleading Coach Kristi Lacroix, who is in her eighth year of coaching. “I am very proud of them.”
The camp included colleges and universities from across the Northwest, including the University of Montana, the University of Washington, Simon Fraser University in British Columbia and Bellevue Community College. NIC was the largest cheerleading squad at the camp competing in the large co-ed division.
Three members of NIC's cheerleading squad currently serve as UCA instructors, traveling throughout the region to lead various UCA camps in the summer. Another six squad members, a third of the team, were noticed by UCA officials and given applications to become UCA instructors. Tryouts for instructors begin in November.
