Book exhibit closes Sept. 9 in NIC Corner Gallery

A collection of artist-made books are currently on exhibit in the North Idaho College Boswell Hall Corner Gallery's Handmade Books Exhibit. The exhibit features books from the James Castle Collection as well as pieces from A Buncha Book Artists (ABBA), a student-based group of bookmaking artists from Arizona State University. The James Castle Collection is a collection of handmade books created by Castle, who lived in central Idaho from 1899 to 1977. He was deaf and possibly autistic and was declared unteachable by the Gooding School for the Deaf and sent home. Despite his disabilities, Castle devoted his life to making books from found materials and left a legacy of more than 20,000 pieces of art when he died. The collection is housed in Boise at the Idaho Center for the Book and has toured nationally, but has never been exhibited in northern Idaho prior to this exhibit. The Liberated Page exhibit, which includes 30 books that demonstrate techniques in bookmaking with sculptural and altered book forms, will also be on display. Dan Mayer and Heather Neal of ABBA will present a slide lecture presentation at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 9 in the Blue Creek/Echo Bay Room of NIC's Edminster Student Union Building. Tom Trusky from the Idaho Center for the Book will follow with a slide lecture presentation about the James Castle Collection at 1 p.m. in the Blue Creek/Echo Bay Room of the SUB. The closing reception for the exhibit will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9 in the gallery. The Boswell Hall Corner Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission to the gallery is free. The exhibit is sponsored by the Citizens' Council for the Arts, the Idaho Commission on the Arts and the Idaho Humanities Council. Information: (208) 769-3427.
