Typography exhibit to open Nov. 8 in NIC Corner Gallery

Graphic artist Matt Tullis knows that typestyles say much more than just the words they spell. Tullis' extensive research in typography led to the creation of “Alternative Typestyles,” an exhibit on display Nov. 8 through Dec. 3 in North Idaho College's Boswell Hall Corner Gallery. Tullis, an assistant professor at Western Kentucky University, focuses on typography as an intricate element of graphic design, featuring assembled alphabets and constructed fonts in the exhibit. Additionally, Tullis has researched old signage, honoring both the nostalgic and typographic history of the signs through photographs. “These unique old signs and letter forms have power because of their execution and history, but also because of their mortality,” Tullis said. “Even if they weren't endangered by evolving corporate needs, changing tastes and modern technology, these signs would not be long for this world. Eventually, time and the elements will destroy them.” Tullis has created his own ornamental fonts and has constructed sculptures using typographic artifacts combined with weathered materials and other objects to create the charm of old signage while invoking thought about the ideas expressed visually. “My goal is for the viewer to experience the nostalgia and the typographic variety which I have tried to infuse into this exhibition,” Tullis said. A gallery walk will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9 in the gallery followed by a slide lecture discussion presented by the artist at 1 p.m. in Boswell Hall Room 102. The opening reception for the exhibit will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 8 in the gallery. The exhibit is underwritten by the Citizen's Council for the Arts and the NIC Art Department. The Boswell Hall Corner Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The gallery will be closed for Thanksgiving Break Nov. 24 through 26. Admission to the gallery is free.
