Area high schoolers take home awards from NIC's math contest

North Idaho high school students were presented with numerous awards during the North Idaho College math department's 23rd annual Math Contest Nov. 9. High school students from Lake City, Lakeland, Post Falls, Sandpoint, Kootenai, Potlatch, St. Maries, Timberlake and Troy high school as well as Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy and Post Falls Christian Academy participated in the competition and were tested on topics in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, basic principles of calculus, probability and the math of computers and logic. Participating schools were separated by seniors and non-seniors in two divisions, large school Division I and small school Division II. Awards including plaques, waivers for in-state tuition and fees for enrollment at NIC, graphing calculators and math software were awarded to the top three scoring senior and non-senior participants. Traveling trophies were awarded to the school in each division with the top score, which is based on the total of each school's top three individual scores. Winners were: Team standings-- Division I: First place, Sandpoint High School; second place, Lake City High School; third place, Lakeland High School. Division II: First place, Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy; second place, St. Maries High School; third place, Timberlake Jr./Sr. High School. Individual standings-- Division I Seniors: First place: Anna Jacobs, Sandpoint High School; second place: Bryan Klein, Lake City High School; third place: Cora Stoner, Sandpoint High School. Division II Seniors: First place: Daniel Smit, St. Maries High School; second place: Eli Berg-Maas, Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy; third place: Brandon Morton, Timberlake Jr./Sr. High School. Division I Non-Seniors: First place: Morgan Bell, Lakeland High School; second place: Wes Sebring, Lake City High School; third place: Maryann Tekverk, Lake City High School. Division II Non-Seniors: First place: Jeanne Lee, Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy; second place: Julian Lemke, Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy; third place: Lloyd Grubham, Kootenai High School.
