NIC to host regional volleyball tournament; CSI disqualified

North Idaho College Athletics Director Al Williams was notified Wednesday morning that NIC will host the Region 18A National Junior College Athletic Association volleyball tournament on Saturday, Nov. 13 in NIC's Christianson Gym. The NJCAA executive committee announced that it did not uphold an appeal by the College of Southern Idaho regarding the number of international players on its volleyball roster. According to Region 18 Women's Athletic Director Norma Carr of Salt Lake Community College, CSI's volleyball program was placed on probation immediately and will be under the following sanctions: ● No postseason play, including the Region 18A Tournament at NIC; ● CSI will forfeit matches played with the ineligible player, will notify institutions of the forfeitures and will change their records to reflect the forfeits; and ● CSI will be restricted in foreign athlete recruitment for 2005-2006 and 2006-2007. The Nov. 13 tournament at NIC will begin at 10 a.m. with the College of Eastern Utah (0-10) taking on Snow College (2-8). NIC received a first-round bye based on its 4-5 record and will play the winner of the CEU-Snow College match at 4:30 p.m. for the Region 18A championship. The winner of the championship match will advance to the NJCAA national volleyball tournament scheduled for Nov. 22-24 at Southwest Missouri State University in West Plains, Mo. Admission to the tournament is $5 per match or $8 for a tournament pass. In other Region 18 action, Salt Lake Community College beat Dixie College Nov. 8 and will play Arizona Western College in Yuma, Ariz. for the NJCAA District A championship. District A includes Region 1 (Arizona) and Region 18B. The winner of that match will also advance to the national tournament.
