Human rights leader to speak at NIC about African AIDS epidemic

The 35th year of North Idaho College's Popcorn Forum Convocation Series continues with a presentation by human rights philanthropist Greg Carr Tuesday, Nov. 23 at NIC. Carr has recently spent time in Africa and has signed an agreement to work with the Mozambique government on a project to address the AIDS epidemic in Africa. Carr will talk about the project during “Combating the Epidemic of AIDS in Africa: A Mission of Mercy” at 10:30 a.m. in the Lake Coeur d'Alene Room of Edminster Student Union Building on NIC's main campus. Carr is the advisory board chair for the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at Harvard University. He co-founded Boston Technology, Inc., in 1986 and served as chief executive officer until 1992. Carr later served as chairman of Prodigy, Inc., a global Internet service provider, from 1996 to 1998. Born and raised in Idaho Falls, Idaho, Carr graduated from Skyline High School in 1977. He was the youngest of seven children in his family. Carr earned a bachelor's degree in history from Utah State University in 1982 and a master's degree in public policy from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 1986. Carr is best known regionwide for his many contributions to human rights projects in Idaho, including a gift of $500,000 to the Anne Frank Memorial in Boise. Additionally, Carr provided $1 million to the human rights center in Coeur d'Alene and contributed the former Aryan Nations Compound to the NIC Foundation to be used as an outdoor science laboratory and a peace park. The presentation is free and open to the public. Following Carr's address, a luncheon will be held in his honor in the Driftwood Bay Room of NIC's Edminster Student Union Building. Tickets are $7.50.
