NIC honors American Indian History Month

North Idaho College is hosting a variety of events and lectures in honor of American Indian History Month in November. The following events are free and sponsored by the NIC Diversity Events Committee: Nov. 18
American Indian Film “Smoke Signals”

7 p.m. in Molstead Library's Todd Lecture Hall
Sherman Alexie's “Smoke Signals,” which was filmed on the Coeur d'Alene Indian Reservation, about two high-school aged boys on a journey from the reservation to Phoenix, Ariz. Nov. 19
American Indian Film “Skins”

4 p.m. in Molstead Library's Todd Lecture Hall
A story about a police investigator who aims to seek justice for himself, his family and his culture on a reservation plagued with unemployment, alcoholism and crime. Nov. 22
Stick Game Demonstration

Noon in Lee-Kildow Hall Room 242
An interactive demonstration of traditional stick games by Norma Peone and Wanda Matt of the Coeur d'Alene Tribe. Nov. 29
“Kennewick Man: An Epic Drama of the West”

4 p.m. in Molstead Library's Todd Lecture Hall
In 1996, two college students stumbled upon an anthropological find that would change the way North Americans view their past. The human skull they found in the mud along the Columbia River in Kennewick, Wash., turned out to be one of the oldest and most complete skeletons ever found in North America. Nov. 30
Annual Henry SiJohn Memorial History Lecture

Noon in the Driftwood Bay Room of Edminster Student Union Building
Presented by Coeur d'Alene Tribal Council Chairman Ernie Stensgar. Stensgar was born and raised on the Coeur d'Alene Indian Reservation and has served as council chairman since 1986. He is currently president of the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians, which represents 55 tribes. Stensgar also serves as chairman of the Alliance of Idaho Tribes and is the Portland area vice president for the National Congress of American Indians. All events are free and open to the public.
