NIC to present address by Coeur d'Alene Tribal Chairman

North Idaho College's Diversity Events Committee is sponsoring a presentation by Coeur d'Alene Tribal Chairman Ernie Stensgar at noon Tuesday, Nov. 30 in the Driftwood Bay Room of NIC's Edminster Student Union Building. The presentation during American Indian History Month is this year's Henry SiJohn Memorial History Address, an annual event started by the NIC Diversity Events Committee in honor of longtime Coeur d'Alene Tribe Historian Henry SiJohn. In his address, Stensgar will cover current tribal issues and tribal sovereignty. Stensgar was born and raised on the Coeur d'Alene Indian Reservation. He attended Chilocco Indian School in Oklahoma, graduating in 1965, and went on to join the U.S. Marine Corps and serve in Vietnam. He has served as council chairman since 1986. When Stensgar was elected chairman of the Coeur d'Alene Tribal Council, the Coeur d'Alene Tribe employed fewer than 75 people. It now employs more than 1,400 people, the second largest employer in north Idaho. Stensgar was instrumental in the 1990 opening of the Benewah Medical Center. The center has grown to become a national model for both American Indian and rural health care since it represents the first time that an American Indian tribe has provided health care for Indians and non-Indians alike. He is currently president of the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians, which represents 55 tribes. Stensgar also serves as chairman of the Alliance of Idaho Tribes and is the Portland area vice president for the National Congress of American Indians. Stensgar is the first tribal leader to be listed among Idaho's 100 Most Influential People and to be named to the Idaho Hall of Fame. The event is free and open to the public.
