NIC's annual jazz concert promises high energy

It's not unusual to see audience members dancing in the aisles at the North Idaho College Jazz Ensemble's performance of JazzNIC. “It's a lot of fun,” said NIC Jazz Ensemble director Terry Jones. “Many people believe it's our best concert of the year.” JazzNIC comprises three days of jazz clinics Jan. 31 through Feb. 2 in addition to the grand finale concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1 in NIC's Boswell Hall Schuler Auditorium. More than 20 jazz groups from area high schools from across the region will participate in the clinics to learn ways to improve their performances. University of Idaho professors Dan Bukvich and Alan Gemberling and Lewiston High School band director Gary Gemberling will lead the clinics. During the Feb. 1 concert, the NIC Jazz Ensemble will perform Don Menza's “Sambandrea Swing,” a fast-paced Latin piece with a swing shout chorus. Saxophonists Ron Keifer and John Sarchio will have a “battle of the saxes” in “Back Woods” by Oliver Nelson. Gary Gemberling will perform his rendition of “Alright, OK, You Win” followed by a vocal performance along with his twin brother Al Gemberling of Frank Sinatra's “I Get A Kick Out of You.” Bukvich will perform “Lover Man” on vibes and will use all the items he can find on stage to create the percussion for the Latin version of “St. Thomas.” The concert is free and open to the public. The public is also welcome to attend the clinics. Groups will perform every hour on the hour from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. all three days in Boswell Hall Schuler Auditorium. The JazzNIC concert is sponsored by the Associated Students of NIC (ASNIC) and the clinics are sponsored by the Nickel's Worth. Information: (208) 769-7764.
