Tax filing services available at NIC

North Idaho College accounting assistant students and other community volunteers will be offering free tax preparation services to those needing help this tax season. Through a grant from the NIC Foundation, the Accounting Assistant program was able to implement the Internal Revenue Service's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program for the first time in 2003. Last year, more than 450 people received tax preparation assistance through the NIC program. Again this year, NIC will serve as a full-service tax-filing site for filing both federal and state (including various states besides Idaho) tax returns electronically. Trained students and community volunteers will be available to assist individuals with filing tax returns. The tax-filing site is open to NIC students, employees and community members. Most general tax payers qualify for the service, although there are limitations for the self-employed. Services will be available from 10 a.m. to noon and 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in Room 209 of Molstead Library on NIC's main campus. New this year is a drop-off service through which individuals can drop off their tax information, fill out a short form and sign and pick up their return later that day. Friday time slots are available for the pick-up/drop-off service only and some Thursday evenings and Saturdays are available by appointment only. Information: (208) 769-3334.
