North Idaho College wrestling team earns national honors

The North Idaho College wrestling team captured the National Junior College Athletic Association Region 18 wrestling title Feb. 12 with a lopsided win at the regional tournament at Highline Community College. NIC qualified 10 wrestlers for the upcoming NJCAA national tournament scheduled for Feb. 25-26 in Rochester, Minn. Five NIC wrestlers captured regional championships out of 10 weight classes. Regional champions were Jeff Hedges of Havre, Mont. (125 pounds), Derek Kipperberg of Ollala, Wash. (149), Josh Erickson of Libby, Mont. (165), Kyle Frawley of Buckley, Wash. (174) and Josh Edmundson of Medical Lake, Wash. (184). NIC wrestlers capturing second-place finishes were Justin Pearch of Oregon City, Ore. (141), Nick Wright of Grandville, Mich. (157) and Evan Mattingly of Vashon, Wash. (197), while Cody Nicholson of Grandville, Mich. (133) and Garret Johnson of Medical Lake, Wash. (285) took third. The NIC wrestling team won the regional title with 104 1/4 points, Southwestern Oregon Community College took second place with 66 3/4 points, Lassen Community College with 59 points, Highline Community College with 53, Clackamas Community College with 26 1/2 and Yakima Valley Community College with 16 1/2.
