Area middle schoolers take home awards from math competition

North Idaho middle school students were presented with numerous awards during the MATHCOUNTS regional competition Feb. 15 at North Idaho College. Approximately 70 middle school students from across the region participated in MATHCOUNTS, a national program intended to increase enthusiasm for math, as individuals and in teams of four. The top three teams and the top seven individuals will advance to the state competition March 5 in Boise. The first place team was from Woodland Middle School. Team members included Coach Nick Lilyquist and students Bryant Baird, Christina Marfice, Haily Strobel and Scott Watford. The second place team was Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy. Team members included Coach Tisha Putz and students Michael Mitchell, Ryan Ward, Steven Munson and Heather Keeley. The third place team was Canfield Middle School. Team members included Coach Teena Roberts and students Ryan Brock, Branden Heiner, Alex Krapas and Alex True. Individual winners were first place Michael Mitchell from Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy, second place Bryant Baird from Woodland Middle School, third place Christina Marfice from Woodland Middle School, fourth place Haily Strobel from Woodland Middle School, fifth place Natalie Stewart from Woodland Middle School, sixth place Nora Neilson from Post Falls Middle School and seventh place Steven Munson from Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy.
