NIC interim men's basketball coach to stay at NIC
Tuesday, March 22, 2005
|photo1|Jared Phay, who stepped in last September to serve as head men's basketball coach at North Idaho College this past season, will remain as Cardinal head coach, NIC Athletics Director Al Williams announced Monday.
"Coach Phay rose to the challenge we were presented with last fall and showed his dedication to the program," Williams said. "He has earned this opportunity."
"I'm obviously grateful to Al Williams and all the community support we had this year," Phay said. "I'm definitely looking forward to being a part of NIC athletics."
Phay was an NIC assistant coach for two seasons before taking over the program last fall. Prior to that he was an assistant coach at Motlow State College in Tennessee, a graduate assistant at the University of Idaho, and an assistant and head coach at Post Falls Christian Academy.
Phay plans to keep his two assistant coaches, Marsell Colbert and Corey Symons.
"This helps to keep stability," Phay said. "We can get to work right away with recruiting."
Phay will hold individual meetings with each of his players beginning tomorrow to determine who plans to return to NIC in the fall.
"We need a couple of go-to guys," Phay said. "We were young this year, but we're ahead of the game with some of the experienced players that plan on coming back."
Phay attended NIC and has his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Idaho.
