North Idaho College's Recreational Sports Department won first place in a recent professional development competition at the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association Conference for its design of officials' t-shirts.

The t-shirts, which are given to students who successfully complete a season as an intramural sports official, took first place in the t-shirt and apparel category against other recreational sports departments from both two-year and four-year colleges and universities. More than 2,000 people attended the April conference in Orlando, Fla., representing schools from across the nation.

|photo1|The t-shirts feature images of a cardinal on an officiating whistle as well as the text “Earned, never given” on the back. The t-shirts were designed by Underground Expressions in Coeur d'Alene under the direction of the NIC Recreational Sports Department.

Between 20 and 40 students officiate for the department each year, training as officials for a variety of sports and often going on to officiate part time for high school athletics.
