NIC soccer teams finish regular season on top

The North Idaho College women’s soccer team finished the regular season with an 11-7-1 record (5-2-1 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference). The Cardinal women finished second in the SWAC, falling 2-1 to Dixie State College in the regional championship match.
 
Women’s soccer player Meghan Kahnle, a freshman forward from Hamilton, Mont., received first team All-Region/All-Conference honors. Lacey Salisbury, a freshman midfielder from Boise, Idaho and Laura Heath, a sophomore defender from Spokane Valley, Wash., also received first team honors in the conference.
 
Nicole Yeggy of Boise, Idaho, Katie Douglas of Rathdrum, Idaho, Ariel Roop of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Makayla Desjarlais of Post Falls, Idaho and Lara Wessman of Idaho Falls, Idaho were named to the All-Region/All-Conference honorable mention team.
 
The NIC men’s soccer team finished 12-1-3 overall (5-0-1 SWAC), clinching the inaugural Region 18 Scenic West Athletic Conference men’s soccer championship Oct. 29 by defeating Colorado Mountain College 5-0. 
 
With the win, the Cardinals move on to the National Junior College Athletic Association district playoffs against the No. 3-ranked Yavapai Community College of Prescott, Ariz., on their home field. Kick off is scheduled for noon Saturday, Nov. 5 with the winner advancing to the eight-team NJCAA national tournament, which will be held Nov. 17-20 in Tyler, Texas.
 
The NIC men’s soccer team was ranked in the top 20 in the nation through the end of the season in both the National Junior College Athletic Association and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America polls.
 
Sophomore forward/midfielder Garga Caserta, of Araqatuba, Brazil, was named SWAC Player of the Year and was also named to the All-Region/All-Conference team. Four other Cardinals received All-Region /All-Conference awards, including sophomores forward Manuel Arceo of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, midfielder Peter Hiel of Helena, Mont., defender Lamar Kumangai-McGee of Spokane, Wash., and defender Chase Robeson of Missoula, Mont.
 
Freshman forward Mike Vredenberg of Hayden, Idaho was named to the All-Region/All-Conference honorable mention team.
