NIC Diversity Events Committee presents winter fiesta
The North Idaho College Diversity Events Committee is hoping to spice up the winter season with “Fiesta de Diciembre” Dec. 9 and 10.
The event will kick off Friday, Dec. 9 with a performance by the Mexican children’s dance group Los Sabrositos at noon in the Grand Bay dining area on the main level of NIC’s Edminster Student Union Building.
Fiesta de Diciembre events will be from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10 at the Harding Family Center, located at 411 N. 15th Street in Coeur d’Alene.
The winter fiesta will include children’s crafts and Latino food, including samples of dishes from the Mexican, Peruvian and El Salvadoran cultures. Committee members along with Estella Gonzalez and Luisa Becher, members of the Latino community, will portray a special presentation of “Las Posadas,” a song traditionally sung at Christmas fiestas symbolizing the Christian biblical tale of Mary and Joseph’s pursuit for shelter at various inns.
Salsa dance lessons by Felipe Lores will be offered in the evening followed by salsa dancing to music by the Spokane Latin band RicoSon.
All events are free and open to the public.
The event is cosponsored by the NIC Latino Club and the Latino Outreach Project.
