NIC to sponsor second annual North Idaho adventure race
North Idaho College’s Student Activities Department will sponsor the second annual NIChallenge, an adventure race Saturday, May 6 at Beauty Bay Special Recreation Management Area on Lake Coeur d’Alene.
NIC’s Outdoor Pursuits program is helping to coordinate the event, which is the only race of its kind held in North Idaho.
“Last year our race was a great success,” said Outdoor Pursuits Coordinator Paul Chivvis. “We had 70 participants from all walks of life with various amounts of physical fitness levels, and they all finished with smiles on their faces.”
Adventure racing is a multiple-sport race based on teamwork and designed to test the limits of competitors. Races often include kayaking or canoeing, trekking, mountain biking, and an orienteering or problem solving obstacle that must be completed along the team-navigated course.
The NIChallenge is a sprint adventure race that incorporates 10 to 15 miles of mountain biking, four to six miles of trail running and two to five miles of paddling and basic navigation as well as obstacles to test teamwork and physical and mental skills. Specific details of the NIChallenge course will not be released until race day to ensure that participants retain their sense of adventure, according to Chivvis.
The race is cosponsored by Fleet Feet Sports, Vertical Earth, Kayak Coeur d’Alene and Out There Monthly.
Teams of two or four members in co-ed, all-male or all-female divisions must register by Sunday, April 30. Cost is $75 per person and includes a capilene shirt from Cloudveil, food at the event and the opportunity to win various prizes.
Register online at http://www.nic.edu/activities/
or in person at the Outdoor Pursuits Office, located on the lower level of NIC’s Edminster Student Union Building.
To get to the Beauty Bay campground, take Interstate-90 east out of Coeur d’Alene and take Exit 22 on Highway 97 toward Harrison. Stay on the highway for 1.5 miles then turn left on Beauty Creek Road and continue for 1/4 mile until you arrive at the U.S. Forest Service campground.
