NIC softball team earns first-ever national berth

The North Idaho College softball team (34-18) won the Region 18 softball championship May 6, earning its first-ever berth to the National Junior College Athletic Association national tournament May 18-20 in Plant City, Fla. The tournament schedule is available online.

The NIC softball team was ranked No. 20 going into the Scenic West Athletic Conference tournament held at Dixie State College in St. George, Utah. NIC beat the eighth-ranked Dixie State College (35-11-2) 9-8 in 10 innings to earn its first conference title.

Outfield/second baseman Stohm Fouty of Polson High School in Montana led four NIC players with multiple hits. Fouty was 3 for 5 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Catcher Stephanie James of Coeur d'Alene High School was 3 for 5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Pitcher/first baseman Spring Montgomery of East Valley High School in Spokane, Wash., was 4 for 6 with one run scored and an RBI. Second/third baseman Christine Shollenberger of University High School in Spokane, Wash., was 2 for 6 with three RBIs.
