NIC volleyball to play four of the top 20 teams in tourney
The North Idaho College women's volleyball team is scheduled to take on four of the top 20 community college teams in the nation this weekend. The Cardinals travel to Salt Lake to participate in the prestigious 2006 Hampton Inn/Fairfield Inn Invitational Volleyball Tournament this Friday and Saturday at Salt Lake Community College.
NIC, ranked No. 12 in the NJCAA preseason poll, beat No. 6-ranked Salt Lake Community College last weekend at the College of Southern Idaho Outback tournament. But this weekend's schedule will challenge the Cardinals with a tough field that includes playing against back-to-back nationally ranked teams.
The Cardinals will meet No. 2-ranked Hutchinson Community College(Hutchinson, Kan.) Friday morning and will then face Scenic West Conference rival College of Eastern Utah later that afternoon. Following that match they're scheduled to meet No. 3-ranked Missouri State University-West Plains (West Plains, Mo.). Friday's evening contest puts the Cardinals against No. 20-ranked Lake Land College (Mattoon, Ill.). Saturday's schedule pits NIC against No. 5-ranked Western Nebraska Community College (Scottsbluff, Neb.).
"The Salt Lake tournament has strong competition," said NIC Coach Bret Taylor. "We've never played the No. 2- and No. 3-ranked teams on a first day. We'll see what we're made of. We're a little more powerful at the net this year with our hitting, we have six experienced players returning to the team and we have a great recruiting class of freshmen."
NIC's first home contest of the season is Sept. 15-16 when they host the 2006 Days Inn NIC Invitational Tournament in Christianson Gym. Teams scheduled to participate are NIC, College of Southern Idaho, Salt Lake Community College, Community Colleges of Spokane, Chemeketa Community College, Whatcom Community College and the Inland Empire All Stars. For More Information
