Presentation/workshop to be held at NIC on peace

|photo1|The Venerable Thubten Chodron, a nun in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, will speak about how to contribute to a more peaceful world during “Make Peace Within and the World Will Follow” at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6 in Molstead Library’s Todd Hall on North Idaho College’s main campus.
In her Oct. 6 presentation and in two workshops held from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7 in Molstead Library’s Todd Hall, Ven. Chodron will offer step-by-step methods for dealing with anger and developing an ethic of non-harming and compassion. The presentations will show people from all philosophical and spiritual backgrounds how to use these methods to contribute to a more peaceful world.
Ven. Chodron, an author of several books on fostering peace and compassion, has practiced this philosophy for approximately 30 years, since she was ordained as a nun in the Tibetan tradition in 1977. She has practiced under the guidance of the Dalai Lama, Tsenzhap Serkong Rinpoche, Zopa Rinpoche and other Tibetan masters in both India and Nepal.
In a humorous style, Ven. Chodron teaches about Buddhist philosophy and meditation worldwide, including as a resident teacher at Amitabha Buddhist Centre in Singapore and at Dharma Friendship Foundation in Seattle. In 2003, she founded Sravasti Abbey, one of the few Buddhist monasteries in the United States located near Newport, Wash.
The event is sponsored by the NIC Diversity Events Committee, the Students for Progressive Change and Peace Coeur d’Alene. Both the presentation and workshops are free and open to the public.
