NIC music department is planning two concerts to celebrate the Mothers Day weekend.
The first one will celebrate with jazz and begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 11 in Boswell Hall Schuler Performing Arts Center when the NIC vocal group, Jazz Co., and the NIC Jazz Ensemble join together for an evening of music.
The Jazz Ensemble concert is titled “Locals” and will include several standards with the featured piece being an original number by local composer Jack Ballard titled “Concerto for Piano No.2.” This heated Spanish piece will ignite the evening with regular Jazz Ensemble pianist George Conrad being show cased. Terry Jones will be directing.
Jazz Co. will be focusing on music with a Latin flair. Many different styles will be represented in this vocal jazz set. It includes; "Desafinado," a bossanova by Carolos Jobim; a samba rendition of the standard "That's All," and latin/swing versions of "Fly Me to the Moon" and "That Old Devil Moon" will be performed by this talented vocal ensemble under the direction of Max Mendez.
Jazz Co. and Jazz Ensemble are comprised of NIC students and North Idaho community members.
On Sunday, May 13 at 2 p.m. the NIC Wind Symphony and Madrigal Singers will present their traditional “A Mother’s Day Celebration” in the band shell in Coeur d’Alene City Park. They will do several light classics as well as some rousing patriotic numbers. The Wind Symphony and the Madrigal Singers are made up of students and community members.
Both concerts are free and open to the public.
Bring mothers and families to these annual spring events. In case of inclement weather the Mother’s Day Concert in the park will be moved to Boswell Hall Schuler Performing Arts Center on the main NIC campus.
