Cardinals win regional softball tourney, qualify for NJCAA nationals

The 2007 Cardinal softball team captured its second Region 18 tournament championship May 5 with an exciting come-from-behind 15-5 win over rival College of Southern Idaho at the Region 18 Tournament in Taylorsville, Utah.

CSI jumped to an early 5-0 lead with five runs in the third inning, but NIC answered with five runs in the fourth and held the Golden Eagles scoreless for the rest of the contest.

The Lady Cardinals soared through the tournament winner's bracket Thursday and Friday with a 12-5 win over the No. 5 seed Snow College and a 9-2 victory over the No. 1 seed Salt Lake Community College. NIC followed with a 5-2 win over Southern Nevada.

The three wins gave the Cardinals the opportunity to make history with back-to-back regional championships and earn a chance to compete at the May 18-20 NJCAA national tournament.

Along with the region championship and automatic berth to the national tournament held in Plant City, Florida, the Cardinals were honored with many other awards as the tournament came to a close. NIC's Angie Boardman was named Scenic West Athletic Conference Player of the Year and Kelcey Cavan was named tournament MVP.

Five players were named to the All-Region squad including Angie Boardman, Kelcey Cavan, Justine Williams, Strohm Fouty, and Kristen Burtch. Shay Craig was named to the All-Region second team.

The Cardinal softball team will enter the NJCAA national tournament as the No. 8 seed and will face No. 9 seeded McLennan Community College of Texas in their tournament-opening game at 2 p.m. (Pacific time) on Thursday, May 17.
