Breaking News: Cardinals take 2nd in the country

Plant City, Florida - The NIC softball team narrowly missed being the 2007 NJCAA national tournament champions Saturday when Chipola College of Marianna, Florida came up with a game-saving incredible defensive play to clinch an unbelievable win in the tournament finals.

NIC suffered a first-day tournament loss, but battled through the losers bracket to capture six consecutive victories before facing the No. 1 seeded Chipola College for a chance to win the national championship. NIC won the first game 5-4 to force the tournament into the "if necessary" game.

Trailing by a score of 3-2, the Cardinals put together a phenomenal string to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh. Alysha Krier singled, Heather Gemmell had a sacrifce bunt, Strohm Fouty singled, Kelli Bridges singled, and Angie Boardman walked. NIC sohomore Shay Craig hit the ball up the middle and the Chipola shortstop made a diving stop and flipped the ball to second base to end the inning. The Cards lost the game, 6-3.

NIC capped its incredible year with a 46-26 record. The finish is the second highest team finish in NIC school history, behind the 13 NJCAA national wrestling championships.

Pitcher Kelcey Cavan, second baseman Angie Boardman, and outfielders Keely Torgison and Strohm Fouty were named to the NJCAA All Tournament team.
