The North Idaho College Booster Club announced the winners of this year’s athletics awards following the annual Spring Auction and Athletic Awards Banquet last month.
The award recipients were nominated and selected by the NIC coaching staff.
The Female Student-Athlete of the Year Award was presented to two recipients, softball player Kelcey Cavan of Billings, Mont., and volleyball player Cintia Alessi from Curitiba, Brazil.
As a freshman, left-handed starting pitcher, Cavan led the Cardinals to the team’s first Region 18 championship in school history. This season, she helped her team place second at the National Junior College Athletic Association Tournament, clinching the second highest team finish in NIC history and a 46-26 record on the season. She was selected to the All-Region second team with 404 strikeouts, or 1.36 per inning, and earned NJCAA All-Tournament honors.
Alessi earned NJCAA first team All-American honors and was a two-time All-Scenic West Athletic Conference selection, while leading the Cardinals to back-to-back regular season championships for the first time in school history. She was named SWAC Player of the Year and also received the College Female Athlete of the Year Award from the North Idaho Hall of Fame Committee.
The Male Student-Athlete of the Year Award went to wrestler Heinrich Barnes of Pretoria, South Africa. Barnes was a two-time NJCAA All-American who captured a national championship this season and finished fifth last season. He finished this year with a 40-3 record and went undefeated against junior college opponents. He was also a two-time Region 18 champion.
The Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award was presented to women’s basketball player Nichole Scott of Juliaetta, Idaho. Scott was on the NIC Dean’s List every semester and earned a 3.9 cumulative GPA. A business major, Scott was an Idaho Top Scholar and former valedictorian at Kendrick High School. She was also named to the All-Conference second team during the basketball season.
The Male Scholar Athlete of the Year Award was presented to men’s basketball player Zach Parks of Anaconda, Mont. Parks, a business major, earned NIC Dean’s List honors every semester and maintained a 3.9 GPA. Parks also helped lead the team to a SWAC regular season championship as a freshman.
The NIC wrestling team led by head coach Pat Whitcomb was selected as the recipient of the NIC Team of the Year Award.
The NIC Booster Club Member of the Year Award was presented to Jon Parson of Farm Bureau Insurance.
