NIC student newspaper The Sentinel earns prestigious national award
North Idaho College’s renowned student newspaper The Sentinel recently earned the title of Best All-Around Non-Daily Student Newspaper from the Society of Professional Journalists.
The prestigious national award was presented to the NIC student newspaper through the SPJ’s 2006 Mark of Excellence Awards, which included more than 3,300 entries in 39 categories.
The Sentinel was competing against four-year colleges and universities for the award and was one of only two two-year schools to win a Mark of Excellence Award.
Other finalists in the Best All-Around Non-Daily Student Newspaper were the University of Nevada, Reno and Auburn University in Alabama.
“The students really are a fantastic team,” said NIC Journalism Instructor and Sentinel Adviser Nils Rosdahl. “They work hard to teach each other—the veterans working with the rookies—so they can maintain their tradition of excellence.”
The Sentinel will be honored during the 2007 SPJ Convention and National Journalism Conference in Washington, D.C., in October.
