North Idaho College defeated Western Texas College (25-19, 25-15, 26-24) in the second round of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) tournament today. Yang Yang, NIC's 6-foot-2-inch middle blocker from China, led the team with 13 kills and six blocks. Libero Emily Sarff from Spokane had 11 digs and three aces and Mariah Smith from Boise had 11 digs. Shelby Lausen, a middle blocker from Alberta, Canada, had five blocks and setter Sierra Pancho from Newport, Wash., led with 22 assists.
No. 7-seeded NIC will advance in the tournament to face 11th-seed Temple College at 2:30 p.m. (Pacific Time). The match will be webcast live at on http://www.ihigh.com/njcaatv/ and www.psblive.com.
Because NIC lost in the first round of the tournament, the Cardinals are still fighting to place as high as ninth in the nation.
