The NIC Sentinel newspaper and three of its staff members have been named national finalists in the Society of Professional Journalists 2011 Mark of Excellence Awards.
This year, student journalists submitted more than 4,000 entries. SPJ judges chose one national winner in each category and two national finalists (runners-up).
The Sentinel was named a national finalist in the category of Best All-Around Non-Daily Student Newspaper.
Gabe Green of Vancouver, Wash., won in the news photography category, Tala Wood of Sandpoint won in the general news reporting category and Catherine Mullaney of Post Falls won in the feature photography category.
