2012 award winners announced at NIC athletics banquet


The winners of this year’s North Idaho College athletics awards were announced during the annual NIC Athletics Hall of Fame Induction, Awards Banquet and Auction held May 5.

The award recipients were nominated and selected by the NIC coaching staff.

The Female Academic Athlete of the Year is women’s soccer player Tia Sharp, who helped lead the 2011 women’s soccer team to a 14-1 regular season record. Sharp started every regular season game for the Cardinals since she came to NIC as a freshman center-midfielder from Bozeman, Mont. She has a 3.94 GPA, tutors other students and has been on the Dean’s List every semester, while earning NJCAA Academic All-American honors.

The Male Academic Athlete of the Year is wrestler Ryan Zumwalt from Spokane. Zumwalt is a 4.0 GPA student, placed first in the Region 18 tournament and earned third place at the NJCAA national tournament this year. Zumwalt also earned distinguished NJCAA Academic All-American honors this season.

The Female Athlete of the Year is Basketball player Korina Baker from Valleyford, Wash. Baker led NIC to the National Junior College Athletic Association national championship as a freshman. The Cardinals finished with a 32-3 record in Baker’s first season, and won the Scenic West Athletic Conference regular season championship this season. Baker was selected as a NJCAA Second team All-American this season, and she has signed a letter of intent with Division I school Southern Methodist University in Texas.

The Male Athlete of the Year is wrestler Kyle Sweedman. Sweedman is a state runner-up from Libby high School in Libby, Mont. He redshirted his freshman year at NIC. This year Sweedman was a runner-up at the NJCAA national tournament. He holds a 3.5 GPA, and was a NJCAA second team All-American.

The NIC volleyball team, led by first-year Head Coach Kandice Kelly, was selected as the NIC Team of the Year. The volleyball team earned ninth place at the NJCAA national tournament in West Plains, Mo. The volleyball team also won the Scenic West Athletic Conference regular season title and finished second in the Region 18 tournament.

Parker Toyota was honored as the Booster Club Member of the Year.

Hall of Fame inductees included Len Mattei, Mary Anderson, Paul Wilson, Crystal Smith Johnson, and Don Sausser.
