NIC makes changes in coaches

North Idaho College’s Head Golf Coach Derrick Thompson has accepted a job with Iowa Western Community College.

“Derrick has been invaluable in building both men’s and women’s golf teams to a competitive national level. He has a wonderful opportunity in his new position and we wish him well,” NIC Athletics Director Al Williams said. “The foundation has been set for s smooth transition to the NWAC (Northwest Athletic Conference, which recently changed its name from the NWAACC). The search is already underway for a new coach for both programs.”

In 2014, NIC’s men’s golf team was ranked No. 7 in the NJCAA final national polls and finished 15th at the NJCAA National Tournament. The NIC women’s golf team was ranked No. 14 and finished 14th at the NJCAA National Tournament.

In other coaching changes, Thane Jackson was hired as the new assistant coach for the NIC men’s basketball team. Jackson was a part-time coach for the Cardinal program the past two seasons. He assumes the position vacated by Corey Symons, who was promoted to the head coach position in June.

“Thane is a hard-working, energetic, young coach,” Williams said. “He will be a great addition to the basketball staff.”
