NIC Outdoor Pursuits offers Canfield Mountain trail work

North Idaho College’s Outdoor Pursuits program is teaming up with the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation, the U.S. Forest Service, and local volunteers to coordinate trail work on Canfield Mountain this summer.

Trail work will start in early July and continue until the middle of November with the goal of repairing and maintaining as many miles as possible to disperse users, minimize environmental impacts, and reduce user conflict. The Canfield Mountain Trail System presents a unique opportunity for trail users to access over 30 miles of trail just a short distance outside Coeur d’Alene. Its proximity to the city and surrounding communities makes Canfield Mountain highly popular and accessible, leading to heavy use by local motorbike riders, mountain bikers, hikers and other users. Regular trail maintenance by the Forest Service, Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation, and local user groups has not been able to keep up with the heavy and increased demand for use, so more maintenance is needed. Local users met with the Forest Service and the IDPR to work on solutions to the maintenance backlog at Canfield in the spring of 2014, resulting in this maintenance plan that includes volunteer work.

Work on the Canfield Mountain Trail System will be accomplished using an IDPR Trail Cat/ Mini-Excavator program in conjunction with volunteer labor from local user groups, under Forest Service guidelines. Funding for the IDPR Trail Cat program comes from the ATV/Motorbike Recreation Fund, which is funded by Idaho OHV users’ registrations fees. The NIC Outdoor Pursuits program will be organizing the volunteers needed to make this project a success.

Interested volunteers are encouraged to contact Jon Totten with NIC Outdoor Pursuits to get involved at (208) 769-7809 or
