Grove named NIC's head golf coach

The North Idaho College Athletics Department announced Thursday that Coeur d’Alene native Russell Grove is the new head coach of the men’s and women’s golf teams. Grove replaces former head coach Derrick Thompson, who assumed the same position at Iowa Western College after leading both NIC teams to the National Junior College Athletic Association national golf tournament.

Grove attended Coeur d’Alene High School, where he was the valedictorian and helped the Vikings win the 5A State Golf Championship in 2004. He received a golf scholarship to the University of Idaho where he served as the team captain and led the Vandals to their best finish in the history of the Western Athletic Conference. Grove was a three-time recipient of the WAC Scholar Athlete Award, and three-time selection on the WAC Academic All-Conference team. At the University of Idaho, Gross set the 36-hole and 54-hole record with scores of 131 and 203 respectively. In addition, he set the UI course record with a score of 62, and currently holds the second lowest career scoring average in school history at 74.2.

“Russell is an exceptional golf talent, and is highly respected as a professional golfer and instructor” said Al Williams, NIC athletic director. “Russell has tremendous connections in the PGA and with NCAA Division I golf coaches, so he can assist in moving our student-athletes to the next level, on and off the course. We have a talented group of returners and recruits, so the foundation appears to be set for Russell to lead our programs to continued success.”

Grove is currently the assistant golf professional at Avondale Golf Club in Hayden. Avondale will remain the home course for the NIC program. Grove was also a teaching instructor at Bunker Indoor Golf and Training in Goodyear, Ariz. Grove will retain assistant coaches Dan Porter -- the Avondale Golf professional -- and Taylor Porter, on his staff. Both the men and women golf teams will compete in the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) beginning this fall. Grove will assume coaching responsibilities immediately and will initiate tryouts for the golf team as soon as possible.
