NIC announces McLean as interim head wrestling coach

Tyler McLean
North Idaho College Athletics Director Shawn Noel is proud to announce Tyler McLean as the new interim head wrestling coach.
“We are excited to have Tyler here to oversee our wrestling program,” Noel said. “He is an alumnus who has seen a great deal of success, and I know he will guide our wrestlers in the right direction.”
McLean is a Washington (WIAA) State Champion from Mead High School in Spokane. After graduating high school, McLean went to North Idaho College where he became an All-American at 157 pounds and completed his associate degree in education.
He then transferred to Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, where he led the country in wins his junior year, becoming the university’s second-ever NCAA All-American and placing fourth nationally. During his senior year, McLean placed fourth at the Reno Tournament of Champions and was ranked No. 1 in the country for ten weeks before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury.
McLean graduated from SFU with a Bachelor of General Studies in Education with a Minor in Curriculum and Instruction. After graduating, he joined the men’s SFU wrestling staff as an assistant coach for three years. McLean was the BC Wrestling Association’s junior development coach for three years, working with the best athletes in the province.
He follows in the footsteps of his father, 4A Washington State Coach of the Year Phil McLean, as an educator with a passion for coaching and growing the sport of wrestling in the Northwest. McLean coached with his father this year, helping Mead High School to their first state championship since 1993.
Through his outreach efforts, he hopes to train and inspire the next generation of wrestling champions at North Idaho College. Tyler will graduate with a Master in Teaching from Whitworth University this spring.
