Program Outcomes Assessment
Assessment Process
-
Early Semester
- Division Chairs list A.A and A.S programs that will be assessed.
- Division Chairs work with Program Faculty to select which program-specific, required course(s) to assess for each program.
-
Mid Semester
- Faculty teaching the selected class(es) for program assessment should import the program outcomes into their Canvas class & create rubric.
- Faculty select the assignment(s) to assess and score students using their Program Outcomes rubric.
-
End of Semester
- Assessment Data for Programs due by June 15.
- Dashboards created for programs by August 1. Divisions and faculty can then use data to examine student success, plan for learning improvements, and have data visualizations to inform Program Reviews.
-
Next Semester
- GEM Assessment ongoing occurs each spring, and data can inform program assessment too.
Though Canvas
Step 1: Import
These instructions will import, into your Canvas courses, the program outcomes for your program. From there we will go over how to build a Program Outcomes Rubric to use for assessment in your class(es). Whether you intend to use an assignment or quiz questions for Program assessment, this is the first step in that process. When you course copy through eLearning to move your materials to the next semester, these outcomes will be copied, and you will not have to repeat this process.
- Log into Canvas.
- Select the program-specific required class that you will use for this program outcomes assessment.
- Once inside the class, select "Outcomes" from the left-hand menu.
- Select "Find' from the menu across the middle of the page.
- Select "Account Standards" on the top left of the screen.
- Select "North Idaho College."
- Select "Program Outcomes."
- Find your A.A. or A.S. Degree Program from the drop-down menu and select it.
- You will see all Program Outcomes listed for your selected program. Select "Import" on the bottom right of your screen.
- Select "OK" to finish the program outcomes import.
- Congratulations! Your program outcomes are now imported into your Canvas class.
Step 2: Building Your Rubric
These instructions will go over how to build a Program Outcomes Rubric to use for assessment in your class(es). Some faculty and programs may choose to attach the program outcomes rubric to quizzes, exams, essays, or individual quiz or exam questions.(Please reach out to eLearning or SLOA if you have questions or need guidance on which method to use for your classes!) You have a lot of flexibility here in how you choose to assess students. No matter what assignment(s) you choose to use for your program assessment when you course copy through eLearning to move your materials to the next semester, your program assessment rubric and the affiliated outcomes will be copied, too: you will not have to repeat this process.
- Select "Rubrics" from the left-hand menu in your Canvas course.
- Select "+ Add Rubric" from the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
- Title your Rubric for easy recognition (English Program Outcomes Assessment Rubric, etc.)
- Note: You will see a 5 point "Description of criterion" heading inside the rubric template. This is built into the Canvas shell for rubrics—you can delete this from your rubric if you wish not to have any points attached.
- Select "Find Outcome" in the lower left-hand corner of the screen.
- From the drop-down menu, select your program’s outcomes.
- One by one, import each program outcome to your rubric.
- Note: Place-marker points have been pre-allotted for each rubric category (meets = 3 pts, does not meet = 0 pts.) These points are just abstract inside the Canvas system and do not need to be used as part of a student’s grade. You can unselect "Use this criterion for scoring" if you wish to remove all points from your rubric.
- Repeat these steps until all your program outcomes are imported into the rubric: a) find outcome b) selecting outcome c) import outcome
- Select "Create Rubric" from the lower left-hand corner of the rubric.
- You are done! Your Program Outcomes Assessment rubric has been created. You can now attach this rubric to any assignment in your class (and future classes) to use it for program outcomes assessment.
