Process for Testing Accommodations

Once students are approved for testing accommodations due to disability-related barriers, they must follow the steps outlined below. In situations where an instructor is able to provide the approved accommodations within the classroom environment, students should complete their exam with the instructor. However, if the instructor is unable to fully implement the required accommodations, students should follow the procedures below to utilize the Testing Center or alternative approved arrangements.

  1. Students must notify instructors when testing accommodation(s) are necessary for an exam.
  2. Testing accommodations must be made 5 business days before the date of the exam.
  3. If the instructor receives testing accommodation less than 5 business days in advance, they may be unable to make needed adjustments in a timely manner; therefore, the student may not have testing accommodations for that exam.
  4. If using the Testing Center to take the exam:
    1. The student is responsible for scheduling each exam and notifying their instructor at least 5 business days in advance. Please visit www.nic.edu/testing to do so.
    2. Student is responsible for arriving at the Testing Center at their scheduled time and ensuring that their exam is there. The student is responsible for contacting their instructor and Disability Support Services immediately if the exam is not at the testing center to make further arrangements to take the exam.
    3. Student must make sure Testing Center Staff is aware they have testing accommodations. If the student followed proper policy regarding accommodations and testing, and the Testing Center is not aware of said accommodations, the student is not required to take the exam. However, the student should immediately contact Disability Support Services and their instructor to notify them of the issue. If a student decides to take said exam without accommodation in place, they forfeit their right to the accommodation(s) on that exam and cannot re-take the exam at a later time.
    4. Instructors will need to manually extend the time allotted for all timed assessments by the stated multiplier. Information about changing student exam/quiz times in Canvas is in the Instructor Guide.
    5. If instructors need additional assistance with Canvas, please contact elearning@nic.edu.
