NIC to host NW Undergraduate Conference in Humanities Nov. 9

The community is invited to the fourth annual 2019 Northwest Undergraduate Conference in Humanities, which will be held at North Idaho College from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9.

The conference celebrates the intellectual and creative achievements of undergraduate students from around the region and gives them the opportunity to present their work in a public and professional academic setting. The keynote speaker this year is acclaimed author Jess Walter, who is the author of eight books including the No. 1 New York Times bestselling novel Beautiful Ruins.

The conference registration fee, which includes snacks throughout the day, lunch, and dinner/keynote, is $35 per person. The fee to attend just the dinner/keynote is $30 per person and will be held in the Edminster Student Union Building. Conference panels will be held in Lee-Kildow Hall.

Participants are asked to register online in advance by Friday, Nov. 1, at www.nic.edu/nwhumanitiesconference.

In addition to Beautiful Ruins, Walter wrote the story collection We Live in Water, was a finalist for the 2006 National Book Award for The Zero, and won the 2005 Edgar Allan Poe Award for Citizen Vince. He’s been a finalist for the LA Times Book Prize and the PEN/USA Literary Prize in both fiction and nonfiction, twice won the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award, and has been long-listed for the Story Prize and the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Prize. His books have been published in 32 languages and his short fiction has appeared twice in Best American Short Stories, as well as in Harper’sMcSweeney’sEsquireTin House, and others. He lives in Spokane with his family.
