NIC awards $4,000 in scholarships to top spellers

NIC’s Cecil the Cardinal welcomes spellers and audience members to the Inland Northwest Spelling Bee held Saturday at NIC’s Boswell Hall Schuler Performing Arts Center. The top two winners will travel to compete at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. in May.

The top three spellers at the Inland Northwest Spelling Bee were awarded a total of $4,000 by the North Idaho College Foundation Saturday, Feb. 8.

“The college is honored to recognize the highest level of spelling in the Northwest. We know they will represent our area well when they travel to Washington D.C. for the National Spelling Bee in May,” said Sherry Simkins, NIC Dean of Instruction, Transfer and General Education. Simkins gave the opening remarks at the Bee, which was held in NIC’s Boswell Hall Schuler Performing Arts Center.

Scholarship winners:

Champion Andrew Ford, eighth-grader from Sandpoint, Inland Northwest Homeschool Spelling Association, awarded $2,000 NIC Foundation Scholarship.

Runner-up Gabriel Aguirre, fifth-grader from Spokane Valley, Inland Northwest Homeschool Spelling Association, awarded $1,000 NIC Foundation Scholarship.

Third place August Haws, seventh-grader from Hayden, Canfield Middle School, awarded $1,000 NIC Foundation Scholarship.
