Placement Assessment Information

If you haven’t taken the SAT/ACT or a Placement Assessment within the last four years or if you have not taken and received college credit for Math and/or English Composition courses at another college/university, then you will need to take the Math and English Placement Assessments.

Placement is based on:

  • ACT or SAT scores completed within the last four years and/or
  • The Write Class English assessment and ALEKS or NICE MP math assessments.
  • Placement guidelines and cut-off scores available below, with recommendations for course sequencing and advising.

Take the NIC Placement Tests

  • NIC uses The Write Course (TWC), a free, unproctored placement assessment for English courses.

More about English Placement

  • North Idaho College offers two math placement options for its students. The first is the NIC Easy Math Placement, which is tailored specifically to the curriculum at NIC. NIC Easy Math Placement is best to take first before the ALEKS. The second is ALEKS, a system used nationwide to assess students' readiness for college-level math courses. Having these options allows students to demonstrate their proficiency in math and determine the appropriate level of coursework for their skills and academic goals.
